- Resistors Are Passive Circuit Element Which Opposes The Flow Of Current. It Is Symbolically represented as
- The property of current which opposes the flow of current known as the resistance and this defined by the unit ohm
- Resistors are the linear element the relation between the voltage current and resistor is defined by the ohm’s law.
- Resistance is directly proportional to the length of resistor and inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of this resistor so as we increase the length of the resistor then the electrons which contribute to the flow of current will see the more resistance.
- Similarly, if we increase the cross-sectional area of the resistance then resistance of the resistor will reduced. So by changing these parameters we can change the resistance of the resistor.
- The resistors are available in various types and shapes.
A. characteristics of the resistors
- Their are different type of parameters and their different characteristics of the resistors
- The first factor is the power rating of the resistors and it defines the maximum power which can be handled by the resistors.
- So while selecting the resistor one should also need to take care of the temp of the resistor
- Second is the tolerance. So it is defines the deviation of the resistance from the nominal value
- The third parameter associated with the resistor is the temperature coefficient of the resistance
- So it is defines the amount by which the resistance value changes with the temperature. This temperature coefficient can be either positive or negative and it is defined by the unit of ppm/c
- The next parameter of this resistor is the frequency response of the resistor
- Now apart from this parameter related to the resistor are the stability and the noise
- So the stability defines how stable the resistance value will remain over the period of time. Every resistor generates its own noise.
- The resistors can be classified in two categories
1. Fixed resistor
2. Variable resistors
- The fixed resistor defines that once the resistor is fabricated one cannot change the value of the resistor
- The variable resistors defines the value of the resistor can be changed by changing the knob.
- Fixed resistor can be classified in different types which are as follows.
a. Carbon composition resistor
i. Carbon composition resistor this resistor is made up of carbon particles and the binder like clay.
These types of resistor are dealing with the high energy pulse.
ii. But now a days this type of resistor are not used because of its poor temperature coefficient and
poor stability.
iii. These types of resistor produces more noise so these types of resistor is replaced by the film
type of resistor.
b. Film Type Resistor :- it can be classified are
i. Carbon film resistor
ii. Metal film resistor
iii. Metal oxide film resistor
iv. Wire wound resistor
v. Surface mount resistor
1. Carbon Film Resistor :-
- It can be classified with carbon film resistor
- These type of resistor are low cost resistor and they produce a less noise
- The tolerance value of this resistor is also less
- The type of resistor are used in high voltage and high temperature applications
2. Metal film resistor :-
- These resistor are very similar to the carbon film resistor
- These are low in cost and the noise and the tolerance they are better than the carbon composition resistor
- It has good stability and temperature coefficient is quite good and they are preferred for the high frequency applications
- Metal oxide film resistor
- In construction they are similar to the metal film and the carbon composition resistor
- They are also cheap in cost and the stability, noise and the tolerance of this resistor is poor
- The temperature coefficient are also poor and these are used in high temperature and high surge applications
3. Wire wound resistor :-
- If you can see the wire wound resistor the metallic resistive wire is wound around the ceramic materials. so the thickness or the gauge of the metallic wire decides the resistance of this wire wound resistor
- These type resistor provides you a high accuracy and also they have a very low temperature coefficient of resistance so as per their precision they used in high power application
- But these types is not suitable for high frequency application
4. Surface mount resistor :-
- It is possible to achieve very high accuracy and the value of tolerance is very low.
