There are five types of DC motor
- PERMANENT MAGNET DC MOTOR
- SEPARATELY EXCITED DC MOTOR
- SERIES DC MOTOR
- SHUNT DC MOTOR
- COMPOUND DC MOTOR
-
Permanent magnet dc motor
- All motors except permanent magnet dc motor (PMDC) are used in industry. PMDC is mainly used in automobiles to operate windshield wipers and washers.
- To raise the lower windows.
- To drive blowers for heaters and air conditioners etc.
- They are also used in computer drives.
- These types of motors are also used in toy industries.
-
Separately excited dc motor
- Separately excited DC motors are often used as actuators in train and automotive traction applications.
- Because of their ability to give a wide range of voltage output, they are generally used for testing purpose in the laboratories
- It can be used for variable speed applications.
- It can be used in low-speed applications and independent of torque, such as paper mills, rolling mills, etc.
-
Series dc motor
- DC series motors are used where high starting torque is required and variation of speed is possible.
Series motor is used in
- Traction system
- Cranes
- Air compressors
- Vacuum compressors
- Sewing machine
-
Shunt dc motor
Shunt motors are used where constant speed is required and starting conditions are not severe.
Shunt motor is used in
- Lathe machine
- Centrifugal pumps
- Fans
- Blowers
- Conveyors
- Lifts
- Weaving machine
- Spinning machine
-
COMPOUND DC MOTOR
The compound DC motors are used where higher starting torque and fairly constant speed are required.
Compound motors are used in
- Presses
- Elevators
- Rolling mills
- Heavy planners
