4000 series was first introduced as CD4000 COS/MOS series. Its supply voltage is very much higher than any other logic family. 5V to 20V is the supply voltage range of 4000 series. Almost all IC manufacturers active during this initial era fabricated models for this series. Its naming convention is still in use today. This series is ideal for use in prototyping LSI designs because of its relatively low power consumption, wide range of supply voltages, and very increased load-driving capability.
COMMON CHIPS
ONE-INPUT GATES
In these types of ICs, there is only one input.
- 4049 – It has 6 inverter gate with output drivers which are capable of driving up to four 74LS inputs.
- 4050 – This IC Hex buffer gate with strong output drivers is capable of driving up to four 74LS inputs.
- 40106 – it has six inverter gates with Schmitt-trigger inputs.
- 40109 – it has four buffer gates with dual power rails.
- 4504 – it has a sic buffer gate with dual power rails.
TWO-INPUT GATES
These are all 14 pin ICs with two inputs and one output. they are widely available in the market and usually comes in DIL-14 or SOIC-14 packages.
- 4001 – it has four NOR gates with two inputs.
- 4011 – It has four 2-input NAND gates.
- 4070 – It has four 2-input XOR gates.

- 4093 – it has four 2-input NAND gates with Schmitt-trigger inputs.
- 40107 – it has a Dual 2-input NAND gate with 136 mA open-drain output drivers in 8-pin IC.
Flip-flops
these all contain D-type(Delay) of a flip-flop. In D flip-flop, it delays the change of state of its output signal until the next rising edge of a clock timing input signal occurs. D flip-flop can store 1-bit of data only. when it receives a clock signal then only it gets a charge.
- 4013 – It contains two D-Type Flip Flop. Each flip-flop has independent data, Q, /Q, clock, reset, set.
- 40174 – it contains six D-Type Flip Flop. Each flip-flop has independent data and Q. All share clock and reset.
- 40175 – it has four D-Type Flip Flop. Each flip-flop has independent data, Q, /Q. All share clock and reset.
Counters
These all contain a decade counter. A decade counter counts in a sequence of ten and then returns to zero after the count of nine. They all have 16 pins.
- 4017 –it is a Decade counter to the 10-output decoder. it works off of a clock.
- 4026 – it is a Decade counter to a 7-segment digit decoder. it can operate in as little as 3V to a maximum of 18V.
- 40110 – It is an Up/Down decade counter to a 7-segment display decoder with 25 SMA output drivers.it is used in various applications of counting and timing throughout the industry.
- 40192 – It is an Up/Down decade counter with 4-bit BCD preset.
- 40193 – it is an Up/Down binary counter with a 4-bit binary preset.
Decoders
- 4028 – It is a 4-bit BCD to the 10-output decoder. it can be used as a 3-bit binary to the 8-output decoder. It can operate at 3V min and 18V max
- 4511 – It is a 4-bit BCD to 7-segment display decoder with 25 mA output drivers.
Timers
- 4047 – It is a Monostable/Astable multivibrator with an external RC oscillator. The IC can be used for generating clock pulse, sine wave, square wave, and many others.

Analog
- 4051 – it is a Single 8-channel analog mux.it can be used in signal gating, analog to digital converter, digital to analog converter, analog and digital multiplexing, and demultiplexing.
- 4066 – It is a Quad SPST analog bilateral switch, each with an active-high enable input and two I/O.
